The Roberts Studios Community Art Award

The Roberts Studios Community Art Award celebrates the incredible talent and creativity found throughout the Grey County & South Georgian Bay community. Created in honour of our first anniversary, this award is our way of giving back, supporting local artists and providing a space to share their work, connect with others, and be recognized for their unique creative voice.

Prizes

    •    Winner: $500 cash

    •    People's Choice: $200 Roberts Studios gift card

Eligibility

    •    Open to artists in the Grey County and South Georgian Bay area

    •    All physical media accepted: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, textile, ceramics, and other handmade work

    •    AI-generated or AI-assisted work is not eligible

    •    Free to enter

•    One entry per artist (one artwork submission per person)

How to Enter

    1    Submit up to 3 photographs of your artwork (multiple angles or details of the same piece) by June 1st, 2026

    2    Finalists will be notified and asked to bring their work to Roberts Studios for exhibition

    3    Finalist work will be displayed in the store during the exhibition period

    4    The People's Choice winner will be selected by visitor vote during the exhibition

Judging and Winners Announcement

The winner of our main $500 prize will be selected by the Roberts Studios team and announced on June 13th.

The People’s Choice award winner will be selected by you! Join us in-store to celebrate one year of Roberts Studios and vote for your favourite piece submitted. If you can’t make it on that day, dont worry, voting will be open online by June 1st (when submissions close). Our $500 winner will be excluded from winning this prize. Our People’s Choice Winner will be announced on June 16th.

Exhibition

Finalist work will be exhibited at Roberts Studios on June 13th, 2026, when we will be celebrating one year of Roberts Studios. Drop in, browse the store, and vote for your People’s Choice Winner!

We ask that if possible, finalist bring their work in to exhibit the day before, June 12th. Artwork may be collected again after 4 pm on June 13th or, if that does not suit, on a date of your choosing.

Photographs that you provide us will be used and displayed for voting at the People’s Choice Award.

Intro to Oil Painting Workshop: Traditional Techniques Through a Flower Study

In this introduction to oil painting workshop, students will explore traditional oil painting techniques through a guided painting of a flower from a reference photo. We’ll build the image using a monochromatic underpainting in raw umber, a traditional approach used by centuries of oil painters. From there, participants will learn how to develop the painting through layered applications of colour, focusing on the fundamentals of form, value, and light. The course emphasizes a hands-on, process-based approach, allowing students to become comfortable with the unique properties of oil paint while gaining a solid foundation in classical techniques and methods. Perfect for all experience levels or anyone interested in exploring oil painting in a fun, supportive setting. You will come away with a finished study and practical techniques you can use at home.

Materials supplied by us to use in class:

High-quality printed colour reference photo 11x14”, Pre-primed canvas, 11x14”, Transfer paper, Sealable Metal Tin (for leftover oily paper towels), Soap for brush cleaning, Large sealable jar or container for collecting used solvent, Brush Cleaning Mason Jar, Masking Tape, Paper Towel, Pencil, Eraser, Sharpener, Kneaded Eraser, Nitrile gloves (optional), Table easel.

Please note: The following materials will be available to borrow or purchase during the workshop. The price to borrow store supplies is an additional $25 (1 day) or $35 (both days). A discount will be applied to any supplies purchased for the class that you wish to take home. Borrowing will be available to everyone, and supplies will be available to purchase while stocks last.

General Supplies

Odourless Mineral Spirit, Oil Medium (eg. Liquin Original by Winsor & Newton), Disposable Palette Pad (large size), Palette Knives (for scooping and mixing), Airtight Tupperware or Container (to collect excess/used paint to take home).

Brushes

A range of smooth synthetic or hog bristle oil painting brushes, sizes 0-8.

Recommended brushes: Filberts, sizes 4 & 8 – for general painting, Round, size 0 & 2 – for detail work

Oil Paint Colours

Titanium White (PW6), Burnt Umber (PBr7), Winsor Lemon (PY3), Winsor Blue (PB15) (also known as Phthalo), Permanent Rose (PV19).

You are welcome to bring any materials from home, too! If you’re bringing your own materials and don’t have everything on the list, such as the exact paint colours or oil medium, you’re welcome to substitute with items you have - just check with us first.

We’ll provide the group with a reference photo of a flower. If you’d like to work from your own image, please bring an 11x14” print-out, the same scale as the canvas, for image transfer.

Please Note:

This workshop uses oil painting mediums and mineral spirits. Oil paint can be messy; wearing aprons or old shirts for clothing protection is advised. We will provide nitrile gloves to protect hands from oil paint. If you don’t have an apron, please let us know upon ticket purchase, and we will lend you one.

You may be photographed or filmed during this workshop for the purposes of marketing future classes or for social media.

Please tell us in advance if you have any accessibility needs or accommodations that would help you participate comfortably.

Light refreshments will be provided; participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, as nearby food options for lunch may be limited by weekend hours.

Valentines Card Workshop

Join us for a relaxed and creative evening with Margaret Buckworth at Roberts Studios, as we explore the art of handmade card-making! While the workshop and materials are inspired by Valentine’s Day, participants are welcome to create any style of card they like.

This workshop is suitable for adults and seniors, and welcomes all skill levels, from beginners to advanced makers.

What we’ll be using:

  • Tissue paper

  • Scissors & glue sticks

  • Cards & envelopes

  • A variety of decorative papers

  • Heart stencils

  • Valentine-themed stamps

  • Heart puncher

All materials are provided.

Each participant will receive a card-making kit from Margaret that includes a card, envelope, and curated papers to create a collaged card. You’ll also have the option to choose additional papers and design your own unique collage, with guidance and support available if needed.

This is a two-hour workshop, offering plenty of time to experiment, create, and enjoy the process.
