In this introduction to oil painting workshop, students will explore traditional oil painting techniques through a guided painting of a flower from a reference photo. We’ll build the image using a monochromatic underpainting in raw umber, a traditional approach used by centuries of oil painters. From there, participants will learn how to develop the painting through layered applications of colour, focusing on the fundamentals of form, value, and light. The course emphasizes a hands-on, process-based approach, allowing students to become comfortable with the unique properties of oil paint while gaining a solid foundation in classical techniques and methods. Perfect for all experience levels or anyone interested in exploring oil painting in a fun, supportive setting. You will come away with a finished study and practical techniques you can use at home.
